What is the Civic Exam?
The civic exam is a mandatory test established by the French government to evaluate candidates' knowledge of the values, history and institutions of the French Republic.
Established by decree no. 2025-647 and the ministerial order of October 10, 2025, this exam has been mandatory since January 1, 2026 for:
- French naturalization application
- Resident card application (10 years)
- Multi-year residence permit application
- Renewal of certain residence permits
This exam is an integral part of the integration process in France and aims to ensure that candidates understand and adhere to the fundamental principles of the French Republic.
