The 8 steps of naturalization
Check eligibility
Make sure you meet the conditions: 5 years of residence, B2 French level, clean criminal record.
Prepare the file
Gather all documents: identity, residence, work, housing, diplomas, proof of income.
Take the TCF
Obtain your B2 French level certificate if you don't have a French diploma.
Submit the application
Submit your file online on the administration portal or at the prefecture.
Take the civic exam
Pass the mandatory civic exam (40 questions, 80% required).
Assimilation interview
Meet with an agent at the prefecture for the naturalization interview.
File processing
Wait for the administration's decision (12 to 18 months on average).
Decree and ceremony
If accepted, receive the decree and attend the welcome ceremony.
Required documents
- Birth certificate (with sworn translation)
- Valid passport and residence permit
- Proof of address (last 3 months)
- Proof of income (tax notice, pay slips)
- B2 French level certificate (TCF, DELF or diploma)
- Criminal record from country of origin
- Recent ID photos
- CERFA naturalization application form
