The 4 fundamental values
Liberty
Liberty is the first pillar of the Republic. It includes freedom of expression, thought, religion, movement, and association. The 1789 Declaration of Human Rights states that 'men are born and remain free'.
Equality
Equality means that all citizens have the same rights and duties before the law, regardless of origin, race, religion or sex. It is the fundamental principle of republican justice.
Fraternity
Fraternity expresses solidarity between citizens. It manifests through mutual aid, social protection and living together. It is the bond that unites all French people.
Secularism (Laïcité)
Secularism is the principle of separation of Church and State, enshrined in the 1905 law. The State is neutral towards religions and guarantees freedom of conscience and worship to all.
