What is the civic exam?
The civic exam is a mandatory test established by the French government to evaluate candidates' knowledge of the values, history and institutions of the French Republic. Since the 2026 decree, this exam is required for:
- French naturalization applications
- Resident card applications (10 years)
- Multi-year residence permit applications
- Renewal of certain residence permits
